Production of the MGB began in October 1962 just after the production of the MGA had ceased. Though often referred to as a roadster, the MGB had roll up windows, outside door handles and vent wings. A Mark II version was added in 1967, and the car stayed in production until 1980, becoming one of the most successful British sports cars of all time, with a total of over 300,000 cars being exported to the U.S. alone.
The final MGBs to be produced for 1980 were named “Limited Edition,” of which the first examples were shipped into Canada in late 1979. The Limited Edition cars for the American market were shipped to the U.S. in October of that year and came with one fan instead of two. All of these final MGBs were finished in black with gunmetal-grey side stripes along the body and a front spoiler below the polyurethane nose. Additionally, these cars came with five-spoke alloy wheels, manufactured by GKN with MG hub center appliqués, a luggage rack and a leather-wrapped and padded three-spoke steering wheel with a special center hub. A “Limited Edition” dash plaque was installed on the glove-box as well.
The 1980 MGB LE here presents itself if very nice overall condition. Acquired in 1997 as a rust free southern car by an MG enthusiast and master technician, the car has undergone a complete mechanical restoration including complete disassembly and rebuild of original engine (.020 over), with all new internals using the best and most appropriate parts available. At the time, the transmission was completely gone through and rebuilt as necessary and the suspension was completely rebuilt using upgrades poly bushings and new shocks. Since completion in 2002, the car has been enjoyed for approximately 3000 miles and properly maintained and stored in a climate control environment until our recent acquisition. The body, floors and underside structure of the car are excellent and rust free. The body appears to be have been the recipient of one older repaint and is not without flaws but overall presents itself as “High driver quality”. The original interior remains in quite remarkable condition…the dash is excellent with no cracks and the original autumn seats show excellent for their age with no rips or cracks. Non-stock items include Mini-lite wheels, Sony stereo with CD and Ansa exhaust. The car comes complete with Jack, Spare, convertible top boot, full tonneau, and a large file full of receipts covering the mechanical restoration and recent services. In short, it is apparent that this MGB LE has been a car that has been enjoyed, properly looked after since new and to this day possesses outstanding drivability. The MGB Limited Editions are pinnacle of the MGB models. This car is an opportunity to acquire an affordable classic, pure sports car, and investment grade automobile that can be driven and enjoyed.
