GR Auto Gallery is proud to offer another fantastic air cooled Porsche 911. This 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera factory M491 optioned turbo look is a work of art. It is 1 of 420 built in '84 and sports just over 116,000 original miles.

This is a far from stock M491 with many high end performance upgrades. First, the car was stripped down to its bare metal and repainted by California Autobody with 15 coats of PPG paint and clear in the original Venetian Blue hue. From there, every single piece of rubber trim was replaced as was the front and rear light lenses. Moving to the interior, a set of Sparco Milano seats wrapped in leather were installed along with the dash and door panels reupholstered in leather, and a Weltmeister harness bar was installed with five-point Sabelt harnesses. A 930S steering wheel and alloy Weltmeister pedals set off the look.

The car then received a heart transplant in the form of a larger 3.8L out of a '95 993 and was built by Black Forest Porsche and BMW in Kearny Mesa, CA. Once the motor was disassembled and inspected, Aase Motors in Fullerton, CA machined all the components and the crankshaft was magnafluxed to check for cracks, then polished and balanced. Mark Kinninger at Black Forest rebuilt the motor with new 102mm Mahle pistons and cylinders. Carillo connecting rods were substituted for the factory rods. The body of the oil pump was clearance to make way for the wider Carillos. ARP head studs were used and the ports on the heads were ported and polished for better airflow and the entire valvetrain was rebuilt with OEM 993 components. The final compression ratio is 11.3:1 and the cams used are the same spec 993 Supercup cams from Web Cam which moved the peak RPM up about 500. New fuel rails with braided fuel lines were installed and 1.75” B&B headers flow into B&B mufflers. A custom ECU chip was programmed along with a dyno tune that shows the new 3.8L produces 283rwhp at 6,500 RPM and 260rwtq at 5,300 RPM. To keep everything cool, three B&B oil coolers were installed.

The original 915 5-Speed was rebuilt as well with built components and the dogteeth on its gears were replaced with stronger ones from the 930 gearbox. At the same time, the ZF limited-slip differential was rebuilt. A Patrick Motorsports lightweight flywheel mates the transaxle to the motor, while the clutch disc and pressure plates are Centerforce components. Next came the suspension with the stock torsion bars being replaced with 23mm Weltmeister bars. A Smart Racing Products 27mm hollow anti-roll bar reduces lean in the turns while a front strut brace reduces chassis flex. At the rear, 30mm Weltmeister torsion bars provide spring effect while a 27mm Smart Racing Products hollow anti-roll bar is in place and Bilstein sport shocks round out the suspension updates. For wheels, tires, and brakes, the stock 930 brakes were left with the addition of Pagid pads and braided steel lines. Kinesis K18 alloy wheels measuring 18”x8” up front and 18”x11” out back were installed with Michelin Pilot MS tires sized 245/40R18 and 315/30R18 providing the grip. The stock Fuchs are also included with newer tires. All the work was done with 105,000 miles. The car was purchased by Mark Kinninger from Black Forest eventually bought and brought to MI where the transmission underwent a rebuild at Renstatt in Ann Arbor, MI along with Turbo tie rods and a Wevo shifter. All of the work is documented and organized by date with the receipts for all the work totaling $66,000.
