The world-famous “Hummer” was conceived in response to the U.S. Army's requirement for a single-platform High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) to replace its aging and varied ¼- to 1 ¼-ton vehicle fleet for front-line combat and support roles. Diesel power and an automatic transmission were required, and the vehicles had to be capable of carrying a variety of weapon systems. Following an extremely rigorous test and evaluation program, AM General was awarded a contract for 2,334 HMMWVs in March 1983. Deliveries commenced in early 1985 and some 72,000 were built by mid-1991. The HMMWV, better known as the “Humvee,” gained iconic status from its extensive use during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the Middle East and nearly 300,000 have been built to date. Over 40 international governments have adopted the “Humvee,” and it is now every bit as famous as the GPW or “Jeep” of WW II and Korean War fame.
Recognizing a winner, General Motors purchased the “Hummer” name and distribution rights and began selling the barely civilianized Hummer H1 through select dealerships. Unmistakable with its rugged bodywork, unique suspension geometry, and brute power, the Hummer H1 became highly popular and begat the smaller and tamer H2 and H3 road models often seen today. Nonetheless, the original H1 remains immensely popular by virtue of its remarkable purity of purpose and adaptability to any job thrown at it.
This Hummer H1 4-Door Wagon from 2000 is an incredibly well equipped example with less than 48,000 miles indicated. Fully accessorized for action, the Hummer features a heavy-duty power front winch, towing rings front and rear, a full frontal brush bar extending over the hood, a full-length cargo rack on the roof, rear “barn doors,” and the Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS). A massive peak torque output of 483 pounds-feet is delivered by the 6.5-liter turbodiesel engine mated to a tough four-speed automatic transmission driving torque-sensing differentials. While obviously built for action, this Hummer is equally capable of use for a night on the town, with the functional yet comfortable and highly inviting interior compartment equipped with air conditioning, Monsoon digital AM/FM Cassette audio system, abundant power features, multiple 12-volt electrical outlets, and more. This two owner H1 has a stellar service history, retains its original books and manuals, boasts a perfect Carfax, remains excellent in all areas and is very well equipped and carrying an incomparable presence. This 2000 Hummer H1 marks an exciting find and are proven investments.
