Porsche developed the 914 as a replacement for its beloved 912, the four cylinder version of the 911. The 914 was intended to be a mass produced vehicle that would be built in conjunction with Volkswagen. When unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1969, it was somewhat unexpected as it did not resemble a Porsche or a Volkswagen. The car, however, with its mid-engine configuration, demonstrated balance and handling capabilities that few have achieved and packaged it into an affordable sports car that would appeal to the masses.
The 1974 Porsche 914 1.8L offered here was sold new by Soo Imports of Soult Ste. Marie, Michigan. The car was optioned with 5-speed transmission, US sealed beam headlights, Tinted glass, Appearance group consisting of foglights, leatherette steering wheel, dual tone horn, center console with clock, oil temp gauge, voltage meter and leather boot. Since, the car has change ownership once in 1981 until our recent acquisition. Today, as a result of consistent care, maintenance, and good weather driving, this 1974 Porsche 914, at 68 229 documented miles, remains in outstanding original condition. According to the previous owner of 34 years and our careful inspection, the paint is believed to be and appears to be all original. The interior is wonderful, the underside is dry and excellent and the engine bay is tidy. Mechanically, the car is outstanding in all respects demonstrating proper power, excellent handling and suspension qualities and proven braking creating a pure car and driver connection. This 914 is fully documented including original books, original stamped service book, original window sticker, a nice stack of service records, owner history and all numbers match and are in place.
The Porsche 914 has recently fallen back into favor with sports car enthusiasts and collectors. They are a wonderful car to drive with confidence as is wide stance and mid-engine placement provide an excellent experience. Although production numbers of these cars were rather high, few have survived as people who owned these cars thoroughly enjoyed the performance they delivered. A 914 of this caliber has plenty to offer its new owner in enjoyment and investment.
