The Austin-Healey 100 had a very simple set of goals in mind when preliminary sketching began; get to 100 mph and look great doing so. After the creation of Nash-Healey paired with George Mason in 1951, Donald Healey was in for the market share of affordable, fast sport cars which could handle better than a MG but cost less than a Jaguar. He pulled together a small development team and started a list of all the cars that could fit this category and price point but still reach 100 mph and the list of competitors was short enough to push the idea into production. One of the largest questions that remained was where this car should be built and when they realized that going through Austin would guarantee 200 cars a week and still keep the quality intact, the deal was signed and the sticker was set at an affordable £750. By the next model Austin-Healey was able to fit this model with a six-cylinder engine, which although it didn't make an improvement on performance, the model was designated as a BN4 (the BN3 being a prototype to this) and the car was badged as a 100-6.
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this mostly stock example of the 1957 Austin-Healey 100-6 BN4 for your consideration. The view over the bonnet of a Big Healey on a tow-lane road with the accompaniment of the rich exhaust note is one of the most soul-satisfying experiences in motoring. This is believed to be actual mileage and a numbers matching example and has a strong running example of an early 6-cylinder Big Healey which was the only year with the creased bonnet making it that much more desirable. Being only used for good spring and summer driving, this model has very well documented maintenance and we are told was carefully stored and garaged in the cold winters to keep it as fresh as possible. With a frame-up restoration completed in the early nineties, the paperwork trail that comes with this fine ride is meticulous. Hosting the ever popular Healey Blue and Old English White two tone which shows a bit of patina but is a beautiful car that shows no signs of bondo or rust repairs.
This car is very stock, upgrades completed are era-correct and is in excellent running order including the factory overdrive. The original engine has been bored out to 3000cc, including the 6-port manifold with the larger SU carburetors, now converted to the 12v, positive ground marine battery, a Pertronix Electronic Ignition is added, a Texas cooler fan, stainless exhaust system installed and all in excellent shape. Other upgrades include a Bosch fuel pump, spin-on oil filter, custom adapters for K&N air filters, lap belts are installed, side wind deflectors in great shape and the beautiful 70 spoke stainless steel Dunlop wheels with three-ear knockoffs really set this one off. Included in this sale are massive amounts of documentation, booklets, owner manuals and other memorabilia, a set of side windows, new in the box windshield in case that chip may happen, photos and invoices of the restoration and even some special tools with new spare parts are included for peace of mind on long trips.
