1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL

In March 1963 the new generation of SL sports cars was launched with the debut of the 230 SL at the Geneva Show. This revolutionary new model replaced the then ageing 190 and 300SL models. Mercedes engineering, together with elegance and practicality, made the pagoda top SL one of the most distinctive designs of its era. During the 60's, Mercedes-Benz refined the model, later fitting the 250 engine and finally arriving at the 280SL. As today, Mercedes-Benz motorcars were never cheap, but superb build quality and sophisticated styling made the 280SL an extremely popular sports car among motoring enthusiasts.

Just out of 30 years of private ownership, GR Auto Gallery is thrilled to present this outstanding, 1968 Mercedes Benz 280 SL roadster for global consideration. After a 10 year stint in storage, circa 2000, this 1968 Mercedes was taken to restoration perfectionist, David C. Treichel of Appleton, WI for a complete, concourse quality, nut and bolt restoration performed over a two year period and completed in 2002. The car was refinished in its original color combination of 408 Havana Brown over 250 Cognac Leather Interior with 8008 Brown Tufting multi-loop carpeting, matching Havana Brown hardtop and Tan soft top. During the restoration process, the paint was renewed over a chassis that was stripped to bare metal, all trim including bumpers, grille, door handles, moldings, emblems etc. were removed and re-chromed to perfection. The interior was masterfully executed featuring all new upholstery, carpet, all instrumentation including the clock, tachometer, speedometer, oil pressure gauge, and instrument cluster lighting potentiometer were rebuilt and refinished to perfection including the chrome bezels, horn ring, and all other bright work. The 2.8 liter inline six engine and complete drivetrain was completely rebuilt to spec and refinished accordingly. The Fuel system was rebuilt including a new tank, pump, and injection lines. The brake system was completely rebuilt and refurbished with new master cylinder, complete new lines, new calipers, new rotors and the suspension has been completely rebuilt including all new bushings, spring pads, tie rods, shocks etc. All parts needing replacement were supplied by Mercedes Benz and purchased through Enterprise Motorcars, a factory authorized dealer. Only new original equipment parts were installed except for some minor parts that were no longer available which were purchased as used and then refurbished. No expense was spared during the restoration process, in excess of $80, 000, to ensure that this car was renewed to exacting standards.

Since, the car has been kept and preserved in a climate-controlled environment, driven approximately 2500 miles, serviced and cared for, and today, the presentation of this car is absolutely stunning. The Havana Brown paint still remains excellent in all areas and after nearly 15 years, shows no signs of shrinkage or dieback. The interior remains near perfect, the engine compartment is stunning, trunk area outstanding, and the underside remains fresh, clean and restored. Mechanically, the car remains extremely fit and completely dialed in and is ready for immediate enjoyment on your favorite winding road.
