1966 Chevrolet Corvair

To-date, The Chevrolet Corvair remains the only American designed, mass produced car with a rear-mounted, air cooled engine. We all know that the 1950's were a very important time for all automotive manufacturers. Performance, safety, design and exploration in to “whats next” catapulted designers to think outside the box. …except that Volkswagen had already been building a highly successful rear mounted air cooled car. You may have heard of it? The Beetle? Anyway, that did not stop GM and designer Ed Cole who was highly regarded in fact, would be known as the god father of the small block engine. The Corvair was built for a little less than a decade with a two-door, four-door, wagon, convertible and even a truck. Although not highly successful, it did do something quite important for GM and that was to attract the import buyer back to Chevrolet. This particular unit is a second generation variant that shows quite nicely, both paint and interior are very presentable as a nice driver, the mechanicals seem to be sorted as it starts, runs and shifts nicely. The downside to this particular Corvair is that the floors have been patched in sports, welded in others and over-all a little crusty. The trunk pan has also been cut out and replaced. There are currently no open holes in the floor but to do it right would entail a new floor pan being installed professionally. Overall this would make someone a nice driver with out the worry of it being a show car or drop a floor pan in and have something quite nice. Please inquire with any questions or concerns.
